Italian Carnivals

One of the most interesting carnivals near Valle d’Aostа is the “The battle of the oranges” in Ivrea.

The main character of the show is the beautiful girl Violetta, the daughter of the miller, who, not wanting to concede the marquise, the owner of this land, in “The Right of the First Night”, cut off the tyrant’s head with a knife and thereby freed the city from its influence.
Showing the people the head, she gave the command for an uprising, during which the Marquis’s castle was completely destroyed.

The Ivrea Historical Carnival has been recognized as an “Italian event of international importance”.
