Capanna Regina Margherita
Capanna Regina Margherita (4,554 m) – the highest mountain hut in Europe.
This mountain hut is on Punta Gnifetti, the 4th Mont Rose highest peak. Build in 1893, it is so named in honor of the Queen Margherita of Savoy, who used to reach the hut, accompanied by mountain guides.Radically rebuilt in 1980, each year hosts thousands of climbers who start from Alagna, Gressoney, Champoluc, Macugnaga and Zermatt.
Route:
1° day : Start in Staffal (Gressoney) – By cable car till Punta Indren – Trekking to Rifugio Mantova or GnifettiStart at 14.00 in Staffal, by cable car we go to Punta Indren (3270 m.).On the galcier trekking till mountin hut Rifugio Mantova (3500 m.) in 1 hourOr till mountin hut rifugio Gnifetti (3647 m.) – 40 min.Overnight in one of this mountin huts.
2° day: From Rifugio Mantova OR Gnifetti to Capanna Margherita (Punta Gnifetti) and back to Staffal
Wake up at sunrise and trekking on the glacier on a quite steep section on the Piramide Vincent and Cristo delle Vette (Balmenhorn). Then pass at the less steep Corno Nero in Ludwigshoe and Parrot to the Colle del Lys pass (4250m).Trekking near punta Parrot with a short descent to Punta Gnifetti.After that, a traverse near serac next to colle Gnifetti, from where it is very close to the rifugio Capanna Regina Margherita (4554 m.).After a short rest, return to the rifugio Mantova and then from the cable car on Punta Indren we bac to the Staffal at about 16:30.Trekking time 5 hours. Altitude difference +1100 m.A maximum of 5 people can be accompanied on a glacier by one guide
