Smelling the Cork…
Take a whiff. Does it smell like wet cardboard? Your mother’s mildewy basement? Dirty socks?
Because if it does, you might have a corked bottle on your hands.
Since cork is a natural substance, little microorganisms often like to eat it, either while it’s still part of the tree or after it’s been turned into a wine cork. If a winery uses infected corks, the wine becomes tainted.
If the cork smells like wine, wine isn’t corked!
Our olfactory system gets used very fast to the “corky” sensation, this is why it happens that when you smell it again you do not feel the corked sensation anymore…trust you nose at once!
